Secure Device Licensing and Authentication Platform
Connecting authentication, role-based access, device licensing, and online and offline activation into one secure platform for connected AV hardware.
Snapshot: Connecting Identity, Licensing, and Activation in One Platform
Connected hardware products increasingly depend on software. Manufacturers need to manage who can access devices, which devices are licensed, and how products are activated across very different network conditions. InspireX designed and delivered a phased authentication and device activation platform for a connected AV hardware manufacturer, bringing together single sign-on, role-based access, device registration, and online and offline activation into one device activation server, with a foundation for telemetry and future product expansion.
ENGAGEMENT TYPE
Phased software development and platform engagement
DOMAIN
Professional AV, connected AV hardware, device licensing, authentication, and cloud software
Software engineering team with authentication, licensing, device integration, and DevOps support
OUTCOME
A scalable foundation for secure access, flexible activation, and verifiable device licensing across customer environments
Challenge: Device access and licensing had to work online and offline.
Connected hardware needs more than a login screen. Manufacturers need to know which users can access which devices, which devices are activated, and how products stay licensed even when internet access is limited. In professional AV and production environments, devices are often installed behind restricted firewalls, on temporary connectivity, or through staged deployment — so activation has to succeed without assuming the cloud is reachable. The platform had to treat connectivity as a spectrum and match an activation method to each environment, while keeping authentication secure and device management coherent across customer organizations.
Key pressure points
Device activation handled through disconnected or manual processes
Licensing and activation that assume constant cloud connectivity
Users and devices hard to manage across multiple organizations
Limited foundation for device visibility and future reporting
Key design constraints
Centralized SSO authentication with role-based access for admins and standard users
Activation via QR code, manual device identifiers, and offline one-time keys
User and device assignment across one or more customer organizations
Production deployment with staging, validation, and CI/CD support
Solution: A centralized platform for authentication, licensing, and activation.
InspireX designed and delivered a secure authentication and device activation platform as the central point for user access, device registration, and licensing. Single sign-on gives users a centralized way into device applications, while role-based access and organization assignment control who can activate, manage, or view devices. For licensing and activation, the platform supports three methods — QR code activation, manual activation using device identifiers, and offline activation using a one-time key entered into the device’s local interface — so the same platform works across cloud-connected, restricted, and fully offline deployments.
Results: A scalable foundation for secure device enablement.
The platform gives the manufacturer a structured foundation for authentication, device licensing, and activation in one place. Centralized access, role-based permissions, and organization and location hierarchy make devices manageable across customer environments, while flexible activation keeps products usable whether or not the cloud is reachable. Capturing device status and usage also lays the groundwork for future telemetry, reporting, and product insight — turning a hardware product into a manageable, software-enabled ecosystem.
The platform gives the manufacturer a governed model for secure access, flexible activation, verifiable licensing, and future product expansion. Together they make licensing and authentication part of the product experience rather than an afterthought.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can't find what you're looking for? Just send us a message.
What is a device activation server?
A device activation server manages whether a device is registered, licensed, and enabled for use. It can connect device identity, user access, and activation workflows into one platform.
Why is offline device activation important?
Offline activation supports environments where devices cannot reliably connect to the cloud, such as restricted networks, controlled AV deployments, or installations with limited internet access.
How can users activate devices?
This case study supports three activation patterns: QR code activation, manual activation using device identifiers, and offline activation using a one-time key.
What role does authentication play in device licensing?
Authentication controls who can access the platform and manage devices. Combined with role-based permissions, it helps ensure only approved users can activate, manage, or view devices.
